Abstract:
This article describes how, in recent years, both the service-learning and the youth development fields have begun to understand the integral role of community in service-learning and youth development endeavors. In the fall of 2000, the National 4-H Council, in partnership with the Innovation Center for Community and Youth Development, launched a new project to create and share models of service-learning that incorporate these wider community development efforts in their work. The project is based on several key principles: building youth-adult partnerships, generating broader civic engagement, and contributing to ongoing community building work. (authors)
