Abstract:

In East Los Angeles, students at Roosevelt High re-create the Japanese garden that once existed on the school's grounds. This activity was prompted by yearbooks from 1941-42, when the garden was maintained-- and later yearbooks show no presence of the garden, which was destroyed when the Japanese students and their families were sent to internment camps. Students studied community, school, and United States history as they worked to restore the Japanese garden to their campus.
