Abstract:
This article examines how an undergraduate teacher education program in a public American university has incorporated the concepts and content of a strong liberal arts education and of service-learning in order to enhance its academic rigor and provide students with more authentic, community-based experiences that will prepare them more effectively for the profession of teaching. The article describes the rationale and structure of this program and discusses certain challenges that its development and implementation have encountered.
