Abstract:

This Quick Coach Guide has been developed for college classes that include a service-learning component and is intended to assist students in approaching each stage of their service-learning experience-- from selecting an organization and contacting the appropriate representative to observing how an organization functions, participating in the work of the organization, and reflecting on the total experience. Each chapter includes "Thinking It Over" questions and a "Challenge Activity" to engage the student in applying the suggestions of the chapter to his or her own situation. Students who participate in service-learning projects have an edge on finding their future roles as citizens. These students get an inside look at how nonprofit and other service organizations function in a community, and they also discover ways that they personally can give back to the community. Hopefully, the guide will play a part in encouraging its readers to continue giving back to their communities even after graduation. (author)
