Abstract:
This article looks back at the controversy in the 1980s and early 1990s over efforts to focus on outcomes-based education (OBE), including outcomes related to students' attitudes, feelings, and life skills instead of just factual information. The author looks back at that abandoned effort and offers three lessons for those who advocate teaching social responsibility, values and civic virtue.
