Abstract:
This chapter reviews findings on the challenges of demonstrating the value of work on community engagement, based on research and practice in what the author refers to as the first generation of service-learning and community engagement. Next, she discusses ways of making community engagement count for promotion and tenure, specifically, issues around framing, documenting, and evaluating the work. Finally, to help individual faculty and particularly institutional leaders, this chapter offers challenges and recommendations for the second generation.
