Abstract:

This chapter combines the theory and practice of service-learning with that of online learning to create a service-eLearning paradigm for a technical and professional writing course. The practices can be applied to a fully online teaching environment or to a hybrid one. The authors draw upon research and their experience to show how a reciprocal relationship between service-learning and online learning can be adapted to service-eLearning in a professional writing class. After defining service-learning and discussing its value, the authors present a plan for linking assignments that can accommodate a service-eLearning project. They then present methods of writing and managing the project using an online course portal. Chapter from Service-eLearning: Educating for Citizenship.
