Abstract:
This paper provides a foundation for understanding the conditions that facilitate transformative learning within education systems, with a view to encouraging and improving civic education for democracy. The authors explore definitions of transformative learning and examine the interconnections between processes of social change and transformative learning. Methods of teaching transformatively include service-learning, experiential education, and arts-based approaches. Finally, the authors give examples of ways in which transformative learning practices can be implemented into school curricula and/or degree programs.
