The Teen Service-Learning Project (TSLP) tests the potential of peer-to-peer, student-designed and implemented service-learning projects to increase seatbelt use among urban high school minority youth. The present study focused on the relationship between the quality of the service-learning interventions and student knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to seatbelt use. The quality of the service-learning intervention was positively associated with increased driver and passenger seatbelt use, greater motivation for drivers and passengers to use seatbelts, and reduction of perceived barriers to seatbelt use among African Americans. From the perspective of service-learning participatns, the quality of the service-learning experience and reflection using discussion were significant predictors of personal development, school and community engagement, and safety related outcomes.
