Institutionalizing engagement, especially at research universities, calls for thinking beyond service-learning and the teaching mission. The authors conducted interviews with 20 faculty members at 15 research universities in the United States who integrate teaching, research, and service in a community-focused scholarly agenda to support the civic missions of their institutions. Major findings highlight supports and barriers for faculty involvement in community-engaged work, and thereby link directly to discussions of the structures and leadership required for changing institutional policies and practices related to integration and engagement. The authors conclude by offering recommendations for practice and further research to support institutionalizing community engagement.
