Abstract:

Since most definitions of engineering involve using science or technology to benefit society, participating in service-learning could be a good way to learn about the value of engineering. Then there was the benefit of being able to work with diverse groups of people. Further, service-learning represents an excellent embodiment of the mission and goals of the University of San Diego, a Roman Catholic institution, to promote students' "intellectual, physical, spiritual, emotional, social, and cultural development." Some of the author's other motives included a desire both to increase retention - by showing students that engineering can be relevant to their lives - and to appeal to nontraditional students, including women and minorities, who might be especially interested in reaching out to the community.
