Given that service-learning research in Argentina is still in an early stage, an exploratory study was necessary to establish the most significant variables, dimensions and indicators, and applicable models of analysis of the service project that had been developing in the Argentine educational system. The investigation was based on the analysis of 6,100 applications submitted to the "Premio Presidencial Esculelas Solidarias" (Solidarity Schools Presidential Award) in 2000 and 2001. The primary objectives of the investigation were to determine whether there was a characteristic profile of the schools that carried out community service-learning projects and to establish the general characteristics of these projects especially of those that could be considered service-learning in the strict sense. Research offered statistical data on schools engaging in service by geographical location, level, kind of administration (state or private), and social context. Service projects data include the most frequently addressed issues and the most habitual beneficiaries. Using four criteria - student participation, service goals, learning goals, and at least one formal curricular link - the research identified 57% of all projects as service-learning, and the most frequent curricular links were studied. The research also described students' mandatory/voluntary participation, the projects' financial resources, and the alliance between schools and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) or government agencies to develop their service projects.
