This chapter explores the links between the work of community service-learning professionals (CSLPs) and broader civic engagement efforts. It describes the various forms of civic engagement and the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (here called habits) necessary to be effective. In addition to focusing on the engagement of individual students, this chapter explores how colleges and universities can be civically engaged. At many institutions, service-learning has served as a catalyst for campus-community partnerships, community-based research, and public scholarship. Conversely, CSLPs have found that by joining campus-wide civic engagement efforts, they gain institutional support for service-learning. [authors]
