Abstract:

The author talks about her experience in a service-learning project that had unexpected benefits for her family. Since the author's son has Down's syndrome, the goal was to match her family with a pair of preservice teachers so they could better understand the education needs of students who have disabilities. The greatest benefit of the program was the exposure it provided to both her family and the preservice teachers to "the other side" of education. When families and teachers better understand each other, they can greatly enhance the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the general education classroom.
