This chapter focuses on creating and utilizing large databases for the purpose of service-learning program evaluation and research. It is drawn from Pennsylvania service-learning evaluations from which large databases were created and used to evaluate the effectiveness of K-12 service-learning programs. The functions, design, and characteristics of large effective databases are investigated, along with the types of skills necessary for individuals to build their own local, large database using existing information (data) from their schools and communities. Finally, the chapter considers ways in which national databases can be used by researchers to enhance service-learning evaluation and research. [authors]
