Abstract:
This chapter begins by detailing salient features of two service-learning programs that embrace both critical service-learning and civic engagement in public schools. It then goes on to examine key features of traditional thinking on what makes for a good education, including the age old ideal of a liberal education. The chapter then looks more closely at the new critiques and conceptions of good education, and concludes by examining some of the achievements, challenges, and promises of critical service-learning that emerge.
