Abstract:

The chapter proposes that the collaboration structure between a student-faculty team and a community partner in an international service-learning (ISL) project can have an effect on the immediate (short-term) partner's satisfaction, as well as the project's adoption and long-term sustainability. A set of key elements desired in a partnership is compiled by examining insights from international education and study abroad, civic education, participatory development, and cross-cultural studies. They are then applied to two ISL projects to illustrate different collaboration models that resulted in a satisfied and an unsatisfied community partner, and one adopted and one abandoned project.
