Although they could probably make more money doing something else, this year 10 local Jamestown High School and Jamestown College students decided to give back to the community as AmeriCorps members. The students did a variety of things, including tutoring at local schools and providing the necessary manpower to open the fitness room and walking track to the public at Jamestown High School. | |||

| February 11, 2005, Tuttle Times Elementary Students Help Inspire New Fitness Bill A group of Oklahoma fifth-grade students has successfully developed a physical fitness program combining a stout workout regimen with an all-around Oklahoma education, for use in fifth-grade classrooms statewide, and they now intend to lobby at the State Capitol for the program to become law. In response to the "Healthy and Fit Kids Act of 2004," which became state law last year with the hope of properly educating Oklahoma students on topics such as health, nutrition and physical education, the class taught by Tammy Long at Bridge Creek Elementary has composed a program to not only encourage fifth-graders around the state to pursue healthy living but to simultaneously teach them about their state. | |||
| December 20, 2004, Daily Times In search of the past A recent visit to the historic Cherokee Nation building east of Locust Grove was the first time many students in Shawn Matheson's history class had ever visited the site. By the end of the school year the students will be very familiar with the historical building thanks to a grant from the Cherokee Nation. Locust Grove Public Schools received notice of a Cherokee Nation Learn and Serve $10,000 sub-grant award. The purpose of the service-learning project is to implement a project that will contribute to the preservation of Cherokee history and culture associated with the Saline District Courthouse site. | |||
| October 12, 2004, The Daily Oklahoman Grant spurs health, safety Elementary, middle and high school students from Oklahoma City and surrounding areas will learn about health, safety and the value of community service through a grant funded program. The state Education Department this month awarded $49,000 in grants to the Oklahoma City, Deer Creek, Mustang, Yukon, Dover and Bridge Creek school districts. More than 700 students are expected to benefit from the grants. To receive the Oklahoma Learn and Serve America Implementation Grants, teachers had to develop classroom projects that encompassed fitness, safety and community issues, said Cori Fritzler, director of the Camp Fire USA Regional Service-Learning Center. | |||
| May 21, 2004, Claremore Daily Progress Service learning on track LEACH - The Leach community will soon have a new walking track - thanks to a dedicated group of students and the Cherokee Nation. "We are just so proud of these students for the efforts they are putting into the project," said Mary Strong, school librarian and project coordinator. A new walking track will be constructed on school grounds as a result of a service-learning project funded by the Cherokee Nation Learn and Serve program. Through this program, students are learning about history, civic involvement and the importance of physical fitness. | |||
