President Clinton Celebrates the Legacy of National Service
PHILADELPHIA, March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Last night, former President Bill Clinton joined an estimated 2,800 participants at The 17th Annual National Service-Learning Conference to celebrate service-learning and honor former Sen. Harris Wofford. The president noted that the national- and community-service movement has given private citizens more "power to do good" than they've had at any time in history.

Workshop brings together students, Herkimer seniors
For a moment, they ignored the decades between them, touching each other with just the right words. "Be kind, happy and considerate," Valley Health Services Nursing Home resident John Coffin told St. Francis de Sales Regional Catholic School eighth graders. "Follow your heart and respect yourself." That was just some of the advice passed along Friday at the end of a writing program partnering senior citizens and students. Ten students and their teacher, Sister Jacqueline Johnas, met with 10 residents to talk, share, listen and write after school for six weeks.

Grant To Benefit Community, Schools
Students at Buffalo State College and those in nearby Buffalo Public Schools will benefit from a $375,000 grant to the college, officials said Thursday. The Learn and Serve America Grant actually was awarded last fall and immediately put to use at School 45 on Hoyt Street, where college student volunteers began tutoring the younger pupils. School 38 also has signed on, and a relationship with School 19 is in the works, grant directors said.

Duke's new program, DukeEngage, will provide full funding and faculty and administrative support to all undergraduates who want to stretch beyond the classroom by tackling societal issues at home and abroad, and, in turn, learning from those real-world experiences.

Education leaders consider high school graduation standards
State education leaders are continuing their efforts to raise high school graduation standards. The proposal includes using tests that high school students are already required to take in the five core subjects, known as their end-of-course exams. In addition, students would have to do a community or work-based senior project.
