| August 17, 2004, The Exeter Newsletter Youths clean up community EPPING - Armed with latex gloves and trash bags, 45 students in Epping's summer recreation program stormed the banks of the Lamprey River, the school grounds and Watson Academy on Friday. The youths broke up into four teams on a mission to clean up the trash that's littering their community. The cleanup project was part of PlusTime N.H./AmeriCorps VISTA's statewide "Service Day of Learning" program. Patrick Dugan, a PlusTime N.H./AmeriCorps VISTA member who worked with students in the summer recreation program, said the goal of the project was to educate the children about the importance of community service. "This gives them a sense of pride and belonging in the community," he said. | |||

| June 25, 2005, The Hoboken Reporter Emergency kits for the needy The students at the Hoboken Charter School proved last week that you don't have to be adults to know how to be prepared for a disaster. On Wednesday, fifth and sixth graders at the school distributed 100 emergency preparedness kits... Distribution of the kits is part of a hometown safety program known as Youth Organized for Disaster Action (YODA). The Hoboken Charter School was only of 10 schools in New Jersey and Pennsylvania to receive support for the program, which was funded through the Institute for Global Education and Service Learning, thanks to a grant from Learn and Serve America. | |||

The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was presented by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program of behalf of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation. | |||
