Students engaged in service-learning projects can help states and localities prepare, respond, recover, and mitigate disasters, and increase community resiliency. Disaster services is one of six focus areas outlined in the Corporation for National and Community Service 2011-2015 Strategic Plan. Within this focus area, the Corporation's objectives are to:
- Increase the preparedness of states and communities through engagement and support of CNCS and its affiliates
- Increase the assistance provided to help states and communities increase their readiness to respond
- Increase the assistance provided to help states and communities recover from disasters
- Increase the assistance provided to help states and communities mitigate disasters
- Increase internal capacity to provide a sustained commitment to our overarching objective
