Prepare TodayThis toolkit was created to support teen community preparedness service-learning experiences. It provides background information on community preparedness and service-learning and takes teens through the entire process of designing a service-learning project, assessment, and reflection. It also includes over a dozen worksheets and several project ideas.

This site is designed to register and affiliate volunteers prior to a disaster so that organizations within the disaster area can outreach to volunteers by their skills and availability and invite them to assist in the recovery effort.
  
 A Guide to Engaging Students in Service-Learning Projects Addressing Hometown Safety: Lessons from FLorida SPaRC
This service-learning manual was produced by the Florida Service, Preparedness, and Response Coalition (SPaRC). SPaRC staff developed this resource to assist students, teachers, faculty, administrators, and community partners in engaging youth in disaster mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery, and school and community safety. Included is a DVD that highlights student and teacher perspectives from a number of SPARC projects throughout Florida.
  
 Universities Rebuilding America Partnership (URAP): A Toolkit for Organizing Group Service Trips to the Gulf Coast to Help Communities Recover From the Hurricanes of 2005
URAP is an initiative of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Corporation for National and Community Service. It offers funding and other resources to empower college and university students, faculty, and staff to lend their skills in rebuilding the Gulf Coast. It is an ideal resource for those considering an alternative break or other travel-based service-learning project.

This site looks at community-based research and it's role in redevelopment after a disaster. Community-based research, when conducted by students (for example, as part of a research methods class) can be an effective means of using service-learning to help those affected by the hurricanes.

 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll - Excellence in Hurricane Relief Service
President's Higher Education Community Service Honor RollThe President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll responds to President Bush’s call to service by building on and supporting the civic engagement mission of our nation’s colleges and universities. This new recognition program is designed to increase public awareness of the contributions that college students are making within their local communities and across the country through volunteer service. Pursuant to the Universities Rebuilding America Partnership (URAP) announced by the Corporation for National and Community Service and the Department of Housing and Urban Development last fall, the Honor Roll program’s special emphasis this year is on recognizing service activities performed in response to the Gulf Coast hurricanes of 2005. The program also identifies and promotes community service model programs and practices in higher education.

 Students Call for National Post-Katrina College Summit - April 9-14, 2007
New featureStudents from twenty-seven colleges, including Xavier, Tulane, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Howard, San José State, Stanford, NYU, Cal, and University of Michigan have put out a call to all college campuses to participate in a "National Post-Katrina College Summit". The Post-Katrina College Summit will be a nationwide, week-long effort to raise awareness about the Gulf Coast through documentary showings, speakers, spoken word, teach-ins, rallies, petition drives, and other events. The Summit is an attempt to catapult New Orleans and the rest of the Gulf Coast back into the national consciousness and to promote federal legislation for a New Deal-style program for the Gulf Coast.

Reports from Learn and Serve grantees and subgrantees
 Maryland
In Carroll County, Maryland Carroll County Public Schools and Volunteer Carroll are working with every school to do something. For example the Career Center students in grades 10-12 are collecting personal care items for Health Kits and School Kits to be distributed by both the Red Cross and the New Windsor Service Center; the students at Shiloh Middle School held a "Shoulder the Burden" fundraiser, where students paid $1 to carry their backpack for the day, something they are not usually allowed to do. The money raised through this events was added to by faculty and parents for a total of $4,500 to support the hurricane relief efforts.
