In the United States, there are specific federal regulations that are in place to provide protection of human subjects. The United States Department of Health and Human Services Code of Federal Regulations, Title 45, Part 46 - Protection of Human Subjects, more commonly known as 45 CFR 46 (Code of Federal Regulations, 2005) provides the basics on the protection of human subjects, but also provides guidance for the protection of pregnant women, fetuses, and neonates (Subpart B); prisoners (Subpart C); and children (Subpart D; Code of Federal Regulations, 2005).
