In the first trimester at this St. Paul JR High school, all students focused on the Learner Profile of Caring. In that spirit, one group of 8th graders in an Art II class used their creative talents and partnered with Heifer International to help the truly needy of our world. Heifer is a non-profit organization providing animals, trees, and other agricultural items to people who are in desperate situations. These gifts not only provide for nutritional needs, but also can help people become self- sufficient. In turn, the recipients are required to pass on one of the animal’s offspring to help another family. The students created a 2010 calendar using linoleum block printing which has a different Heifer animal each month. The animals were then colored in brilliant abstract color. Students sold the calendars for $10 and raised nearly $1500 which was donated to Heifer International. Heifer Project International expressed interest in using the students’ art work in their official publications!
