The Adopt-a-Family project runs for a short time during the holiday season. This timing is appropriate. This is a period when a student's attention is diverted to seasonal festivities. The class learns care and attention during an otherwise harried season. Each year, the Salvation Army receives hundreds of applications from under-privileged families for help with Christmas who would have otherwise had a very bleak holiday. Identified families are often single parent and/or low-income families surviving month to month. Christmas for many of these parents is not a happy time. Participating classrooms are matched with a family in need. The class provides their "adopted family" with a Christmas meal, food staples and personal gifts for each family member.
