This St. Paul after school program did a hunger initiative/service-learning project that extended out to the whole school and their local community. Their service-learning project objective was to educate themselves and others about the needs of the local community by adopting the neighborhood food shelf and clothing closet. This project reinforced the importance of compassion, respect and fairness for the people in need in the local community. Students learned ways to help hungry families in their immediate neighborhood. They sponsored monthly donation drives, researched the statistics of people in need in the area, educated others about the function of the food shelf and how each person can help. They delivered donated goods and did site visits to the food shelf. The students saw the daily workings of the facility and got to meet staff, volunteers and families who utilize the food shelf. The students wrapped up their project by holding a school-wide food drive that collected over 3,750 donated food items in the month of March. All the students in the school lined up for a “Human Food Chain” to deliver the items to the food shelf! Students established goals and strategies and they implemented problem solving skills when faced with road blocks. They demonstrated leadership and cooperation during the project.
