The 7th and 8th grade students at Monte Vista Middle School decided they were sick of looking at a weed infested plot of land behind some classrooms. The students wanted to beautify the area but they also wanted to make it something other than an ordinary garden. The students decided to create the California Native Plant garden in a waste area behind the classrooms. The garden would be divided up into different ecosystems that would be capable of supporting different types of wildlife. The students wanted to share the garden with the younger students and create a guide that not only informed them of the plants in the garden but a variety of plants Native to California. The students decided to make a garden that would grow only plants native to California and help others become aware of other plants native to California. The students also wanted to give guided tours to younger students and parents during open house
