The Cesar Chavez Memorial Garden and Greenhouse Project is housed at the Northern California Regional Facility. The facility exists for incarcerated youth who are dually diagnosed with a mental health and alcohol and/or other drug condition. This project can be implemented in any school setting where space and resources are available. The purpose of this project is to provide an engaging learning environment that allows students to pursue special interests, integrate course requirements and participate in a community enhancing service. Food from the garden is directly donated to the local food bank and to other school sites in support of their nutritional needs. Funding for the construction and equipment costs of building the greenhouse and garden space were provided by a state grant offered through the Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism: Cesar Chavez Day of Service Learning.
