As a participant in the Bay Area Cesar E Chavez Service Learning Alliance, students in the 2nd grade participated in a canned food drive to help the needy. They learned about migrant farm workers and the life and values of Cesar Chavez prior to the service. The focus of the service focused on Cesar Chavez's values and principles, including his preference to help the most needy and his support for efforts to reach those in need, dispossessed, or forgotten individuals in their society. This service fulfills their Social Studies, Science and English requirements. Students helped advertise this fundraiser by creating posters, making classroom presentations and writing letters to their families. Their class sorted the cans into bags by food groups. They also graphed the number of cans brought in to class each day. They donated the food collected over the month to a local community food bank.
