Description:
Community college students enrolled in a writing class will serve a neighborhood nursing home or assisted living care facility, visiting with a resident and practicing their active listening skills. These skills include attending, asking good questions, minimally encouraging, being able to paraphrase to clarify understanding, reflect feelings to demonstrate empathy, summarize, and ultimately integrate all of these skills in facilitation of a life story being told to the student. Students will journal and write a final paper about their experiences. From Metropolitan Community College.
