The goals of this course are as follows: 1. To be able to communicate at an advanced level in French using the present and past tenses. - Students will be able to accurately use the present and past tenses in direct and indirect discourse, at a high intermediate level, especially in written communication. 2. To understand the complexities of being "Other" or marginal in a given society and develop this understanding with high school students. - Students will be able to integrate their course readings about the "Other" (exchange students, immigrants) into their writing topics and to develop exercises and activities to use with the high school students. 3. To work with inner city high school students of French for mutual benefit--in a mentoring relationship; for practicing spoken French; to develop leadership skills. - Students will participate in a Service Learning project that connects them to high school French students where they will communicate in French through programmed activities and exercises that examine and explore attitudes toward the "Other". 4. To develop critical thinking skills through reflecting/processing this service experience. - Students will maintain a group blog where they will post a short reflection essay, in French after each session at Stivers. 5. To create a final presentation at the Journee d'Immersion.
