Give Unto Others

Reading a few books about homeless children, December and Fly Away Home by Eve Bunting helped students in the 2nd grade understand that although they have comparatively less than those around them, they have more than others and wanted to help others in need. The annual holiday school food drive has never been particularly highlighted and therefore had been relatively unsuccessful. To remedy this, the class sought to encourage greater participation not only from within the classroom but also from the entire school population and nearby neighbors through letters, posters, and presentations. In the process, they learned the academic content in Language Arts, Mathematics, History, and Visual Arts.
