In partnership with the Animal Humane Society and the Minnesota Valley Humane Society this project introduced students to humane values (respect, fairness and compassion) by learning about homeless animals. The students hosted two separate presenters who discussed issues ranging from the function of animal shelters, controlling the pet population and pet care and safety. The students raised awareness school-wide by collecting pennies at a Halloween festival and at the school’s Fun Fair. They published four editions of their own Discovery Club newsletter to educate all students about issues related to homeless animals and to reflect on what they learned. The students also toured a shelter and learned ways to continue to help homeless animals in the future.
YOUTH VOICE: The project was completely student driven and they were very proud of what they accomplished.
