The second grade students at Tully C. Knoles explore a unit on "Work, Money, and You" from our state adopted Social Studies curriculum. Students learn that people work to earn money, so that they can satisfy their needs and wants. We discuss the differences between needs and wants. This lesson focuses on what children want. We survey the class to determine the most popular want and confirm that children want toys. Since not all children are able to have an abundance of toys, due to various circumstances, we decide, as a class, to promote a Tully C. Knoles Joy for Toy Drive to benefit those children in greatest need. Students develop a school survey to find out how many families have a surplus of slightly used or nearly new toys that they no longer use or have out grown. The survey also indicates whether they are willing to donate new or used toys to a needy cause. The survey results indicate that our students can help those more in need by donating toys to the Tully C. Knoles Joy for Toys Drive. Toys are presented to the children at the Homeless Shelter and Dining Hall at Christmas time.
