New and Used Book Drive

Description:

The second grade students at Tully C. Knoles enjoy reading books of different genres at various levels. We know about the importance of reading as we transition from learning to read to reading to learn. We discuss ways to enrich our reading experiences. By brainstorming, we conclude that not all children have easy access to reading materials. In order to help other children, we decide, as a class, to promote a New and Used Book Drive at our school site.

We begin our lesson by doing a read aloud and discussing the purpose of books. We web the reasons why people read. We ask our school librarian to give us a presentation on the history of writing forms and how books evolved into how we use them today. Students brainstorm how to get access to reading materials. The teacher and students create a web to organize their thoughts as to how to get access to reading materials. We know that we are able to check out books at our school library. We also discussed how people have access to various reading materials at the public library. Another way that students have access to affordable books is through monthly book orders that the teacher sends home each month.

Students decide that they would like to donate books to a charity so that other children had access to new reading materials. Students conduct a school survey to find out if any families would be willing to donate a new book or a slightly used book to a worthy cause. The results of this survey indicated that the families of our students were willing to help others in need. Students also encouraged family and friends to purchase affordable books from our monthly book orders.

With various promotions in place, the teacher would take advantage of special purchase offers and bonuses to compliment the amount of new books that would be donated. The students then vote on a particular charity to donate the books to.
