A second grade class incorporates the study of peppermint into each of the core academic areas. As a celebration/demonstration, the class makes peppermint ice cream for patients of the local cancer care center.
Great ideas materialize from great passions. Mrs. Webb's mother was diagnosed with cancer in July of 2006. After a year of experiences that no one anticipates nor emerges from unchanged, Mrs. Webb decided that during the upcoming school year, her second grade students would learn more than reading, writing, and arithmetic; in addition to the three R's, she and her students would learn to serve. After a interdisciplinary unit on peppermint, students prepared peppermint ice cream that was given to patients at a local cancer care center.
