Youth developed pet emergency packets which include evacuation, veterinary care, and pet personality forms.
The second Alaska middle school service-learning group chose pet emergency care as their topic area. The youth developed packets which include evacuation, veterinary care, and pet personality forms. The packets also include a special window alert stickers from the ASPCA and a supply list for pet disaster kits. The students made compiled and distributed 500 packets of information for pet owners. The students created a website that includes all the pet emergency information. The student's website is linked to the Municipal Office of Emergency Management's website. The following is a quote from the students that appears on their web site: "We are a group of 6th grade students from Pacific Northern Academy working with the Camp Fire USA Service Learning Program. This project is a Service Learning project that we chose to do. We chose to do this project because we thought it was a need in our community. We think people should have a disaster plan for their pets, not just for ourselves. We have done a lot of research on disasters and pets and have decided to educate you. We took a field trip to Office of Emergency Management and they taught us a lot about how to be prepared."
