Project Fish is a year-long service learning project implemented in 12th grade Government/Economics Class at Fortuna High School. Located in Region One, Fortuna High School students are examining local economics, policy, legislation, and civic action through the lense of the local fishing industry.
Throughout the school year, the importance of the fishing industry (commercial and recreational), and the problems it faces, are presented in 12th grade Government/Economic classes. The introduction to this project is done by showing recent newscasts dealing with one of the controversial issues affecting the fish population. After the presentation the students are asked to divide into small groups and discuss why the problem has arisen, and what they think some possible solutions might be.
