Fortuna Middle School 8th grade math students designed birdhouses, and doghouses in their math classes. After initial designs were approved, students made scales drawings of their projects that included all the component parts necessary to make their project. It was required that all materials used in these projects be recycled materials. Upon completion of these projects, they were graded, and stored for sale at a public auction, one part a silent auction, another part a live auction. Funds derived from the auction can be used for public service projects decided upon by the students.
In their English class, 8th grade students wrote a persuasive article regarding their project which was to serve as the basis for an advertisement for the sale of their project. In their art class and computer class, students used their persuasive article to create a poster to advertise their project. Prior to the auction of student projects, these posters were posted in store windows in town along with actual samples of their projects.
