This course focuses on multicultural education in the context of the immigrant community and English language learners. Students will read prominent literature that informs multicultural education research performed through the lens of critical literacy. At the same time, students will partner with immigrant families in the community, with the goal of exploring the families' definitions of literacy and their performance of literacy in the home and in daily life. Students will also investigate parents' expectations about their children's school experiences as compared to their own in their home countries. Students will design a research proposal to explore some aspect of schooling for immigrant children, whether in the ESL or the content area classroom. The course provides an opportunity to put research theory into practice.
