Description:
As there are limited employment opportunities throughout the Hoopa Valley rural community, poverty is a pervasive problem. Residents have basic shelter, food and clothing needs, including the ever-present challenge to fund youth activities. Recently, the Hoopa Tribe's Division of Human Services opened a volunteer second-hand clothing store in Hoopa. Informed of needed volunteers at the new thrift store in Hoopa, the students decided to do a service-learning project that would include a clothing drive and store work that provided the students with opportunities to learn inventory and sales skills. Eight students volunteered for eight weeks during school hours in the project.
