Urban Gardens Seminar

Description:

The Urban Garden Seminar is a student-led seminar that gives students a deeper understanding of our food system using an interdisciplinary, participatory and experiential framework. The course focuses on using community-based research techniques to study community gardens in the Riverside area. Undergraduate students also lead youth and children on a journey of the food system, including food system cycles, planting cycles and cooking.

For the first part of the final project, students use new knowledge provided by university and community members to create a community garden manual. The second component introduces students to local food system issues by integrating research to explore food justice in the city of Riverside. This course was supported by Learn and Serve America and California Campus Compact.
