Veterans Recognition Dinner

Description:

Following September 11, 2001 and the emphasis on patriotism, the idea that many veterans in our community were receiving little or no recognition for contributions they had made during service in the armed forces surfaced. At the same time, I personally, as the lead teacher for service-learning at my high school campus, wanted to convey to my colleagues outside of my science discipline that service-learning experiences could be developed with interested students. When I put this idea out to students, 30 volunteered to investigate, plan, develop and implement an event to honor the area veterans. This is the second year for this event and we all learned from the challenges and successes of the first year. A dinner was held in which 200 veterans and 75 students came together to eat and discuss service experiences in war time.
