This project was conducted and written for 11th Grade U.S. History. After in introductory study on founding principles of democracy, the democratic process, and historical trends in voter participation, students begin the project (Part I) with a voter participation poll, which has to be accomplished before Election Day. Students then observe the election process via news media, which is discussed in class.
In the analysis portion (Part II), students summarize their opinions, based on their study, with respect to voter participation and the democratic process. They prepare a formal advocacy letter, addressed to their congressman. Students share their final letters and conclusions in response to Part II reflection questions with the class. In the closure component (Part III), responses to student letters are read in class and the celebration and final reflection are completed.
