For the past three years, on the first Wednesday of October, parents and teachers at Topa Topa Elementary School in Ojai have joined hundreds of students, parents, mayors, city council members, superintendents and other community leaders from across the country for a walk to school in celebration of National Walk Our Children to School Day. Last year, seventy percent of the student body walked or rode their bikes to school that day compared to approximately 25% on a typical day.
The goals of "Walk to School Day" are to motivate parents to leave their cars at home and walk with their children to school; encourage children and parents to spend time together and practice safe pedestrian behavior; to promote a healthier lifestyle; and to inspire the community to commit to making it safer for children to walk, bike, and play outside.
