Description:
Poetry, in its many different forms, is an excellent way for students to reflect upon the area that they live. Arrange a field trip into the Village inviting the Elders to speak with the students about oral traditions akin to poetry. Students will write stories which reflect cultural knowledge and learning and which utilize the standards and conventions of a well written paper.
Publish the efforts of the students in a newsletter, school/district newspaper, yearbook, or on the school web site.
