Description:
Eureka High School 9th grade students enrolled in the MIT(Manufacturing Industrial Technology) course build wood duck nest boxes. Students learn that the habitat surrounding them in Northern California is an ideal community for the wood duck. However, due to forest clearing practiced in the area, the wood ducks have a limited area to reside in. The construction of these nest boxes, in coordination with the Humboldt Wildlife Refuge, helps to increase the population of the wood duck, which nearly became extinct in the early 1900's. The MIT students realize that they providing a service to their community and to the environment they all live in.
