Kapiolani Community College Helps Shelter Hawaii's Homeless (A Learn and Serve America Grantee)

Students, faculty, and staff from Hawaii’s Kapiolani Community College assist in converting tour buses to homeless shelters during the 2010 MLK Day of Service.Over 70 students from Kapiolani Community College honored the spirit of Dr. King by proving a much-needed service to a struggling community—Hawaii's rising homeless population. KCC’s service-learning team partnered with Hawai’i Helping the Hungry to Have Hope (H-5) to convert an old tour bus into a temporary homeless shelter, as part of the Evans Bus Project. The new mobile shelter joins an existing fleet of three buses as part of a shelter complex that includes restrooms, tables, and running water. KCC students also helped build a roof for an outdoor area for the complex, and transformed an air freight container into a computer room for residents. Watch video from the event on KITV.
