C.A.D.D. (Caxys Against Distracted Driving)

Mission Description

Raising awareness in the Lake Forest Academy community is one of our major goals. We want to educate all members of the community including all students, teachers, and other families who live on the campus. We want to show them what the dangers of distracted driving, especially texting while driving, are. We would like to make sure every one in the school is made aware by posting advocacy posters and signs around the school buildings. We also planned an event to take place within the school to help further their education on distracted driving. The event took place on April 8, 2010 and involved a driving simulation while texting and trying to walk a straight line and trying to shoot a basket with beer goggles on. According to data that we recorded, drivers entering and exiting our campus were distracted 6.7% of the time. After we held our safe driving event that statistic dropped down to only 3.5% of the time. Awareness has been risen within the community and people are now trying to be a little more safe on campus. We can only hope that our message gets spread through the entire city and soon maybe the state or the nation.

Fundraising for our mission is to collect funds from donators and then donate our raised funds to an organization such as SADD (Students Against Distracted Driving). Our goal for the event was to have activities that caught the eye of students and it cost a dollar to play the game. We also tried to encourage other members of the community to donate to our cause. This all took place during the driving event on April 8, 2010.

Political changes we would like to make include a nationwide ban on texting while driving. There are many dangerous accidents and wrecks due to distracted driving. 5,870 people were involved in distracted driving accidents last year. Motorists 29 and under were responsible for more than a quarter of the accidents. Our research also found that 10% or more of all distracted driving accidents for each age group were all fatal crashes. Our group is writing a letter to the legislation trying to convince them to sign a bill into law that involves a nationwide ban on texting while driving. There isn't a way to ban all types of distractions at once so we are trying to take the first big step by getting rid of texting while driving.
