In celebration of Global Youth Service Day 2009, the East Brunswick, New Jersey (Synergy) Student Chapter of People to People International collected books to improve the primary education of ‘Invisible Children’ of northern Uganda. The chapter's kick-off event was a Hunger Banquet that took place on Saturday, March 28. A month-long book drive was conducted in the community culminating on April 26, marking the chapter's contribution to the Global Youth Service Day efforts. In addition to individual donations, three organizations, the East Brunswick Friends of the Library, McCabe Library at Swarthmore College and The Unitarian Society of East Brunswick, donated unsold books from their annual used book sales to the chapter's efforts. For the chapter's drive, 26 youth and 37 adults donated a total of 3,000 books. In June, the books will be consolidated with those collected by Summit High School, Oak Hill Academy and Harrisburg Academy for shipment. Together, all groups exceeded their goal of collecting 10,000 books. All proceeds from this project will be donated to rebuild schools, recruit teachers and mentors, and supply textbooks for children in northern Uganda. This project contributes to the United Nations Millennium Goal of providing universal primary education for children. People to People International is proud of the great participation of the East Brunswick, New Jersey Student Chapter during its Global Youth Service Day project.
